A vegetable Aluminum foil Candle Lighter Tongs ProcedureLight a candle and then carefully insert your piece of veggie into the flame and try to get it to ignite. This may be difficult with some vegetables and may take some time to get it to ignite. Now repeat the same process described above with the snack food (i.e. the chip). You might want to try other foods as well, if you have snack foods to spare.
WARNINGS: Use kitchen tags to keep fingers away from fire; Use a sink or driveway; Wear protective gears when appropriate

- Describe what you found. Describe how the snack food burned compared to the sample of vegetable material.
- If you’re burning a piece of broccoli or a potato chip, why doesn’t it burn away completely?
- What happens to the energy in a piece of food when you burn it, where does the energy go? Where does the matter go?
- Did you discover any difference between the vegetable and the snack food? Why/why not?
